Interesting article. I have never thought of SEO being used negatively, though that is highly sheltered of me. I guess that is just a totally different ball game for people to go there and what's worse is definitely the copyright. I guess with maintaining rank and all with search engines is one set of rules to play by, but copying other people's work is a totally different ball game. I know it happens all the time, especially on frontiers such as the web since monitoring of content isn't always top notch (especially from the authors), but as ethical human beings, it's our job to play fair.

Lisa’s last blog post..Shutter Sisters

Interesting article, Mig. Seems like we've all been talking and thinking a lot about ethics recently.

I've tagged you for a meme to select ten previous posts that give a good picture of what your blog is all about. I look forward to seeing your favorites.

Google Bowling. Wow. That's fiendishly clever. Completely evil, of course, but fiendishly clever. I imagine Spacely Sprockets' and Cosmo Cogs' SE marketers working round the clock Google Bowling each others domains.

Ha ha! But they do double-check some things... As Matt Cutts said: report paid links and see what happens.
The point is: when it suits their purposes they not only double check. They "triple-check."

Oddly enough, I've never checked to see if any of my content is copied in anyway...I read posts about it. I hope I don't get into too much trouble for this. As for SEO's doubtful manners, well, there are whites, black and grays in any line of business. The more whites and light grays, the better. But controlling it is a bit of a challenge, even when Google is trying to control it.

I hate the fact that Google sometimes operate like a machine. It is machine based, but they also have people there. Some issues should be double-checked by a human mind.

Yes, but the network of friends already goes into the SMO business and SEOs don't really take that road. Personally, I like to explore all the possible online marketing channels and make the best out of my online presence. And I work the same for my clients.

Well said, Mihaela. Some of the tactics employed by SEO people clearly go over the edge. The term "black hat" comes to mind. Stolen content is also a big problem as copyright laws are violated without any thought to consequences. Diligence is necessary to protect one's turf and developing a network of friends can certainly be helpful during those times when we are most afflicted.
