Recently Carson Brackney has sold his website for (maybe) under $ 200. Carson owned Content Done Better a site I used to read often. It’s pointless to review the site now, because the new owner is still making the first steps in Carson’s shoes… and that’s a difficult task for Michi. I’ll keep an eye on Michi in the future though. I feel close to her, since she considers Germany “home.” Why? Guess where I live?
This is the only case of “sell and buy” domains I know. And I think the price was too low. Carson sold more than just a domain: he sold content. Content is creative work. The moment you sell a site with all its content you end your legal right to use any of your previous articles without written permission from the new owners. I don’t know what Carson plans. I do know we are going to miss him. But in the meanwhile, I welcome Michi and hope to see a lot of her around.
This “sell and buy” story made me think about the whole industry. Believe it or not, the buy and sell domains is an industry. Take a look at BuyDomains.com for example. In the business category of BuyDomains.com you learn that transports.com is for sale, valued at $70,000.00! On life & family parentalcontrols.com has a financial value of $152,570.00! On BuyDomains.com you could even sell domains. And judging from the prices I’ve seen browsing around, you have enough chances to make a good sale.
So how do you feel about selling your domain? I don’t ask about buying. Buying a domain from BuyDomains.com is pointless. I’ll explain why in a future entry. But selling… It comes a time in our lives when we need to move on: a new job, another dream. Deleting a site that was part of other’s lives is not the most altruistic gesture. Yet a new owner will change the personality of the site (as Michi already did on Content Done Better). The new owner, if you are lucky, will continue the trend of the site, but what if you don’t have Carson’s luck? What if the new owners will transform your site into a made for AdSense crap? Would you sell? And if you wouldn’t, is there anything you have in mind to preserve your entries? A book maybe?

1Wow. I didn’t know I was being talked about! (grins). You are right, though. Carson is a difficult act to follow. I’ll try to make him proud by doing the best I can, and I hope that people who used to come and read the blog and utilize his services will continue to do so. I’m still getting my feet wet in the blogsphere, too, so I’ll apologize in advance to those people that I will undoubtedly offend in some way in the future — most likely without meaning to or realizing it! Thanks for welcoming me and giving me a chance to show that Carson sold to someone who will uphold the good name of Content Done Better.
