Well, if you want to generate traffic to your website, increase rankings and, at the same time, give something useful to the online community, the best way to do it is to create a blog, host it on your domain (your website) and, who knows… in the process you might as well win some money with it.
Blogs are great advertising tools – self-advertising I might add, or better said: self-branding tools. A good blog will help you achieve public recognition – we are talking about the online public – and generate targeted traffic to your website. As a SEO tool, a specialized blog is probably one of the most effective. And… it’s a must. (Useless to say I run two business blogs and I am now considering, for the fun of it, starting the 3rd one)
But the most important aspect you should remember before starting blogging is that there is a right way to blog and a wrong way to blog.
Chose your blog software, choose your host – business blogs, for best results don’t go for a free blog – and start posting. Follow the online writing rules (some guidelines you’ll find in my article “Make Your Content Rule the Web”): think about a catchy headline, that will also act like a call to action, inviting the web surfers to actually read your comments. The secret to a successful blog? Don’t try to SELL! SHARE!
As you see, I am talking to you, my readers, so when you write, do the same. Don’t lie to your readers, don’t try to mislead them, don’t try to influence them in doing something they might not be in the mood to do, be respectful and be ready to accept critique. Users, if they like your content, will probably bookmark your page for further reference. If they are intrigued by it and want more information will comment it, will engage you into sharing more of your knowledge or thoughts. So your writing style should be unfussy and open, pleasant and inviting. Oh, and let’s not forget: never offend a competitor!
When you start blogging you’ll need to … go on blogging. So you’ll need to post on regular basis – daily if possible. Blogging requires commitment and discipline. To be successful you should transform blogging into a ritual. I do this and posting in forums. While posting in forums is not a daily routine, blogging is.
I have noticed an slight increase of traffic to my website since I host this blog on pamil-visions.com. Well, this blog is not old, it also had some problems: using bblog before lead to a lot of trackback spam and eventually to a major lost of data and a server crush. It took me two weeks to solve the problem and pamil-visions dropped from the SERPs as well. Now it’s back for the targeted keywords, not in the first two pages as before, but in the first five. Yet, its PageRanks dropped and now I have only a few pages with a rank. I guess, as I made the website new, I’ll have to wait 3 months to see the Google green bar again. Well, not so bad… after all I have enough clients now.
Back to blogging: don’t take content from other websites just to make your blog content rich. Uniqueness is the key to high rankings. Originality is the key to people’s hearts and gaining recognition.
I hope this post helps new bloggers and even more experienced bloggers. And hey, I am open for your advice! Don’t hesitate to post your comments, but: I will not tolerate blog spam. Thank you.
